When Bluetooth LE Audio Is Worth Caring About
LE Audio is a different radio stack from Classic A2DP, with LC3 as the mandatory codec, native multi-stream for true wireless buds, hearing-aid support, and Auracast broadcast. It only appears when both the phone (or TV) and the headphones speak it. A Bluetooth version number on the box is not that confirmation.
Bluetooth LE Audio runs on the Low Energy radio, not the Classic radio that A2DP and SBC have used for twenty years. The Bluetooth SIG's LC3 codec, in ITU-R BS.1116 listening tests the SIG published, delivered higher quality than SBC at the same bitrate, or similar quality at roughly half the bitrate. Multi-stream audio lets each earbud take its own synchronized stream instead of a proprietary relay. Auracast lets a source broadcast to many sinks without pairing. None of that engages unless source and sink both implement the LE Audio profiles. A marketing line that says Bluetooth 5.2 or later is necessary but not sufficient. If your phone and headphones still fall back to A2DP, you are hearing Classic Audio with a new box.

Codec names have been a hobbyist sport since aptX. LE Audio is easier to misread because it sounds like 'Bluetooth Low Energy, the thing your fitness tracker uses,' which is the radio, plus a whole audio architecture on top. Classic headphones still use A2DP on the older BR/EDR radio, with SBC as the mandatory codec everyone implements and a zoo of optional ones. LE Audio uses the LE radio, LC3 as the mandatory codec, and new profiles for unicast, broadcast, and hearing aids. If only one side of the link has that architecture, the handshake falls back. You paid for a future.
The decision is therefore not 'is LC3 better than SBC in a lab.' The Bluetooth SIG already ran that test. The decision is whether the two devices in your bag both speak LE Audio today, and whether you want a job Classic Audio cannot do, especially Auracast or a hearing-aid stream.

Unicast LE Audio can run. You may get LC3's efficiency, multi-stream to each bud, and better call paths. Confirm in the OS Bluetooth settings that the connection is not still sitting on A2DP.

The SIG's LC3 characterization paper used ITU-R BS.1116-3 lab listening tests, the method for small impairments. Under those conditions, LC3 beat SBC at the same bitrate or held quality while cutting bitrate by about half. That is a codec result, not your subway commute. It does mean LE Audio can spend less radio time for similar music, which is battery, or spend the bits on robustness. It does not mean LC3 beats a high-bitrate LDAC or wired connection in a quiet room. Those are different comparisons.
Nick Hunn, quoted by the SIG, put LC3 encode-transmit-decode on the order of 20 milliseconds. That is codec-plus-link talk, not a promise every consumer product ships a 20 ms game mode. Media profiles may add buffer for reliability. If latency is why you care, you still need the product to advertise a low-latency LE Audio mode and a matching source.
Skip the upgrade if your phone is three years old without LE Audio, your buds are Classic-only, and you do not sit in Auracast rooms. Buy it when you are replacing both ends, when hearing-aid compatibility is the point, or when a venue you actually use has turned Auracast on. The rest is waiting for the ecosystem, which the SIG has been clear would coexist with Classic Audio for years.

Is LE Audio the same as Bluetooth Low Energy?
LE Audio uses the LE radio. A BLE heart-rate strap is not an LE Audio device. Look for LC3, LE Audio, or Auracast in the audio spec.

Will LE Audio make my old aptX headphones obsolete?
No. Classic Audio remains. New phones keep A2DP for years. Obsolete is the wrong word. Unupgraded is accurate.

Can I hear Auracast with Classic buds?
Not natively. You would need a transmitter or adapter that receives Auracast and re-sends Classic A2DP, which adds latency and another battery.

Wireless audio compresses a signal, shares 2.4 GHz with Wi-Fi and microwave ovens, and adds buffer so a dropped packet does not become a glitch. LE Audio and LC3 improve the efficiency of that bargain. They do not repeal the bargain. A wire still wins on latency and on not negotiating a radio.
