The 1875-watt figure on a U.S. dryer is 15 amps at 125 volts, not a promise about air temperature or how long the motor will last. Independent heat and speed, a filter you can actually clean, and a plug with immersion protection are the specifications that change how the tool is used.

The American Academy of Dermatology's heat advice is to use the lowest heat setting and to blow-dry less often. That advice is only usable if heat and airflow are separate switches. Travel dryers and 'compact' 1875-watt models all claim power. How do I tell which features actually control heat on my hair, and which numbers are just the bathroom circuit talking?
1875 watts at 125 volts is 15 amps, the usual U.S. branch-circuit ceiling. It does not tell you the air temperature at the hair or whether the thermostat will hold that temperature.
AAD guidance for blow-drying is the lowest heat setting, partial air-drying first, and less frequent use. Independent heat and speed switches are what make 'lowest heat, enough airflow' possible. A single slider that only offers hot-fast or cool-slow cannot follow that advice.
CPSC lists hand-supported dryers without integral immersion protection, the block-shaped ALCI or GFCI plug required by UL 859, as a substantial product hazard. A compact travel dryer still needs that plug. A clogged intake filter is how many dryers overheat and trip their thermal cutoff.
Compact hair dryers are sold as if wattage were a heat score. In the United States the number on the barrel is usually 1875 watts because 125 volts times 15 amps is 1875 watts, and 15 amps is the everyday branch-circuit rating behind a bathroom receptacle. That is an input ceiling. It is not the temperature of the air at your hair, not a promise that two 1875-watt dryers run equally hot, and not a reliability rating. This is a specification-literate reading of what wattage, heat and speed switches, filters, and the CPSC immersion-protection rule actually describe.
The American Academy of Dermatology's advice for blow-drying is blunt: the tool can contribute to hair damage, so air-dry when you can, use the lowest heat setting when you cannot, and use hot tools less often, aiming toward once a week. That advice only works if the dryer lets you choose low heat without also forcing low airflow. Many compact and travel dryers still couple those two into one slider. That coupling, not the missing hundred watts on the box, is the buying problem.
Independent heat and speed means two controls, not a marketing mode named 'gentle.' Heat is the element. Speed is the fan. High airflow with low heat moves water off the hair without sitting on the AAD's lowest-heat instruction. High heat with low airflow cooks a section in place, which is the opposite of that instruction. A cool-shot button is a third, momentary path: it dumps the element so you can set a style. Conair's worldwide travel-dryer booklet, a typical compact spec sheet, lists three heat settings, two speeds, and a cool shot, which is the minimum layout that can follow dermatology guidance. A dryer that only offers high-hot and low-cool cannot. If the listing does not say that heat and speed are separate, assume they are not.
Weight in the hand is the compact-dryer spec people feel first and listings bury. A sub-pound folding dryer is easier in a long session than a 1.5-pound barrel, until the lighter tool is light because the intake is a slot you cannot clean. Balance matters more than the gram number: a motor in the handle (some digital-motor designs) versus a motor in the head changes wrist fatigue and where the cord pulls. Culture Column has not weighed a panel of dryers. You can still read the listed weight, hold the boxed tool if you are in a store, and refuse a barrel that wants two hands. A concentrator that adds length and then falls off undoes the weight savings, because you will be catching it.
Compact, in this aisle, usually means a folding handle, a shorter barrel, and a bag. It does not mean lower wattage. Plenty of folding travel dryers still print 1875 watts. What compactness does change is balance in the hand, whether a concentrator nozzle stays attached when you point downward, and whether the cord is long enough to reach a hanging head from a hotel outlet behind the sink. Weight is a spec you can read. A dryer that is light because it omitted a filter you can remove is not a better travel tool. It is a motor that will ingest lint until the thermal cutoff trips.

The safety specification that actually has a body count is not wattage. Hand-supported hair dryers are used next to water. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission determined that a hand-supported dryer without integral immersion protection is a substantial product hazard. That protection is the block-shaped plug with a ground-fault or appliance-leakage interrupter, required by UL 859 for household grooming appliances (and UL 1727 for commercial ones). The rule lives at 16 CFR 1120.3. A dryer that lacks it can be refused at import and can be recalled. Compact and dual-voltage travel dryers are still hand-supported dryers. A folding handle does not exempt the plug. Look at the plug, not the barrel art. If there is no test-reset block on the cord, it is not a U.S.-legal household dryer under that hazard listing.

Filters are how a compact dryer keeps the airflow it was rated for. Hair, dust, and product residue pack the intake. Conair's travel-dryer instructions say blocked or clogged air-intake vents cause the dryer to overheat, and that an automatic safety device will shut the dryer or the heat off. The fix in that manual is unplug, cool 10 to 15 minutes, and clean the intake with a small brush or a vacuum brush. Dyson's professional-dryer manual treats the filter as a service part: a warning LED, a removable cage, and a wash procedure, plus a stated maximum operating temperature of 221 F in normal conditions and a thermistor safety shutdown at 293 F. Those temperatures are Dyson's documented design limits, not a league table, and not a reason to buy that brand. They illustrate the two things wattage never tells you: whether the dryer measures its own air temperature, and whether you can clean the thing that makes it overheat.
If a compact dryer has no removable filter and no printed instruction for clearing the intake, you are buying a sealed lint trap. That is a thermal-cutoff cycle waiting to happen, and it is also how airflow collapses so you compensate with more heat. For travel, dual voltage is a separate circuit question. Conair's worldwide 1875-watt travel dryer is specified for 125/240 V AC with automatic adjustment and an LED that reads green at 125 V and blue at 240 V. A single-voltage 125 V dryer on a 230 V supply is a different, dangerous product. A plug adapter does not change voltage. Conair: unplug and allow 10 to 15 minutes after a thermal cutoff. Dyson: unplug and cool before any filter work. Do not pick lint out of a live intake.
If the filter is not removable, Conair's instruction is a small brush or vacuum-brush on the air-intake openings. If it is removable, follow the maker's cage-removal steps. Never run the dryer with the filter left off if the manual forbids it.
Some cages are wipe-only. Some, including Dyson's documented procedure, soak in soapy water and must dry completely. A wet filter on a live element is a new hazard.
Reduced airflow after cleaning still means a blockage or a dying fan. Raising heat to compensate is how hair and the thermal fuse both lose.
Attachments are mechanical, not magic. A concentrator that stays on the barrel lets you dry a section without the nozzle falling into the sink. A diffuser that actually clips on is the difference between using one and leaving it in the box. Magnetic attachments are a retention method some makers document. Friction-fit nozzles that loosen when hot are a known annoyance you can check in the listing photos and the parts diagram. Ionic or 'plasma' claims are manufacturer language about charge in the airstream. They are not a CPSC requirement and not an AAD recommendation. The dermatology floor remains lowest heat, less often, and a heat-protectant product if you are using hot tools.
Compact versus full-size is a packing and balance decision, not a gentleness decision. A folding handle that puts the barrel closer to the wrist can make a 1875-watt tool easier to hold than a long salon barrel, or it can put the exhaust closer to the scalp if you are not paying attention. AAD's lowest-heat instruction does not change because the handle folds. What does change is whether you will bring the tool, and whether you will clean a smaller intake that clogs faster. Travel dryers that drop well below 1875 watts do so to run on weaker circuits or to shrink the element. They dry slower. That can be a feature if it keeps you on low heat longer. It is a defect if you compensate by pressing the barrel into wet hair. Hold the tool away from the head, keep it moving, and finish on cool shot. Those are technique, and they are available on any dryer whose switches allow low heat and a cool shot. Wattage will not do them for you.
Cord length and switch placement decide whether a compact dryer is usable at a hotel sink. A six-foot cord, which Conair prints for at least one compact model, reaches more outlets than a three-foot cord coiled for packing. A switch under the thumb you can find without looking matters more than a fourth heat LED. Folding handles crack at the hinge. That is a wear point, not a reason to avoid compact dryers, but it is a reason to see whether replacement is a whole new tool. IEC 60335-2-23 is the particular safety standard for hair-care appliances, including hairdryers. It is a safety document, not a performance test of drying time, and it is not a substitute for the U.S. immersion-protection rule on the plug.
Will this dryer travel to a country with a different mains voltage?
A 125 V-only dryer needs a real voltage converter abroad, not a plug adapter. Conair documents automatic 125/240 V adjustment on a specific travel model. Read the INPUT line on the dryer you are buying.
AAD: lowest heat setting. You can only follow that if high airflow is available at low heat.
CPSC: no integral ALCI/GFCI plug is a substantial product hazard. Conair: clogged intake overheats the dryer.
Treat 1875 watts as a 15-amp circuit number. Buy independent heat and speed so you can follow AAD's lowest-heat instruction with enough airflow.
Confirm the block-shaped immersion-protection plug and a filter or intake you can clean. Compact is not an exemption.
If it will travel, read the INPUT voltage range on the dryer. A folding handle is not dual voltage.
Wattage is input on the circuit. It does not tell you exhaust temperature or thermostat quality. AAD's instruction is lowest heat, not highest watts. Two 1875-watt dryers can still differ in how they split heat and fan, and in whether they shut down when the intake clogs.
Ionic claims are manufacturer language, not an AAD or CPSC requirement. A documented temperature sensor, as in some Dyson manuals, is a real control loop for that product. It is not a ranking, and it does not replace independent low-heat and high-airflow switches on a cheaper dryer.
