It depends which ring. Oura's own help page, updated July 2026, says that without membership you keep three daily scores, battery, and settings, and you lose the detailed analysis the hardware is sold on. Other makers include the app in the hardware price. Buy the commercial model, not a generic 'smart ring' category.
The argumentA smart ring without a software plan is only as useful as the maker allows. Oura, the category's reference product, documents a stripped app without membership: three daily scores (Readiness, Activity, Sleep), battery, profile, settings, and Explore content, with no API. Membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US after a complimentary first month, for Gen3 and newer. That is a hardware purchase that rents its graphs. Competitors such as RingConn and Ultrahuman, and Samsung's Galaxy Ring with Samsung Health, are widely sold without a required wellness subscription. If you will not pay recurring, do not buy a ring whose value lives behind the paywall. If you will pay, price the three-year total, not the checkout tile.

Oura (Gen3+): without membership you see three daily scores, battery, and settings. Detailed sleep analysis, 24/7 heart rate, temperature insights, and most reports are membership features, per Oura's July 2026 help article. US price $5.99/month or $69.99/year.
If that remainder is not enough, you are not 'using the ring without a sub.' You are using a paperweight that still knows a score.
No-subscription rings exist. Compare them on fit, battery, and whether you already live in Samsung Health, not on a fantasy that every ring works like a 2018 fitness band.

The category question is a trap. 'Smart rings' are not a standard. They are several businesses, some of which sell you a sensor and some of which sell you a magazine that happens to need a sensor. Oura wrote the second model down. As of their July 2026 membership article, a Gen3 or newer ring without a paid plan shows three daily scores, the battery, and settings. The list of what membership includes is the rest of the brochure: detailed sleep, around-the-clock heart rate, temperature, stress, heart-health metrics, reports.
If you will not pay $69.99 a year in the US, do not buy that brochure. Buy a ring whose maker already included the app, or buy nothing.

Three scores without the graphs are a mood ring with better PR. You cannot audit why Sleep was 71. That is fine if you only wanted a nudge. It is not fine if you bought the ring to see stages and HRV. Oura will still let you export data from Membership Hub even without a plan, which is decent. It will not let the stripped app pretend to be the full product.
Samsung's ring is only 'free' inside Samsung Health. An iPhone user is not buying the same object. Ecosystem lock is a kind of subscription paid in phone brand.
How to interpret recovery data is what to do with the numbers if you have them. Smart rings compared is fit, battery, and sizing. This page is only whether the lights stay on after the trial month.
Oura without membership is three scores. That is their document, not a rumor.
If you will not pay, buy a no-sub ring or skip the category.
Three-year cost is hardware plus every month you will actually stay.
Yes, in the limited mode Oura describes. Your data remains if you do not delete the account. The detailed features go away until you pay again.
It is a magazine. It is cheap compared with replacing a $400 ring. It is expensive compared with a $0 Samsung Health install if you already wanted that ecosystem.

The category is not one product. Oura documents a membership that gates most of the app. RingConn and Ultrahuman sell the graphs with the hardware. Samsung's ring lives in Samsung Health. Battery claims are manufacturer tests on specific sizes. Fit is a sizing kit, not your jewelry size. Culture Column has not worn these rings.
